The Evaluation Triangle
The evaluation system we have chosen to use for our focus/pilot groups involves asking participants to answer three questions - what I liked, what I learned, and what could be better. The approach we take is to draw a large triangle on a white/black board or large sheet of paper and divide it into three. One of the above questions is written in each section of the triangle and each section is allocated a colour. Participants are then given three different coloured post-its (corresponding with the section colours) and asked for their comments under the three headings. Each person then sticks their post its in the relevant section of the triangle. After the session the post-its are gathered together and an evaluation report prepared.
Toni had experience of using this evaluation method successfully in a literacy context and we considered it the most appropriate for our purposes.
As a result of the colour coding there is no reading involved – thus eliminating discomfort for those who dislike reading in public situations. Similarly the writing requirement is minimal: one word will suffice. Because the process is anonymous participants are however, given the opportunity to express their opinions. This approach gives all participants (regardless of their literacy skills), the opportunity to influence and contribute to the project in a meaningful way. As this project is entirely concerned with the promotion of equality, it is considered vital that both literacy tutors and learners are given every opportunity to contribute to the development of the project.
