LEIS has been offering short Continuing Professional Development courses which have been explore the relationship between literacy, equality and creativity.  These courses have been delivered throughout Northern Ireland and the Border Counties.  Please use the links to the left to find out more about these courses.

Literacy & Equality through Alternative Methodologies

There are three opporunties to attend this course:

Tuesdays, 11th & 18th October 2005, 9.30am - 4pm

These are two-day or 5 weeks accredited courses for adult educators who are interested in using alternative methodologies int ehri practice.  Participants will critically reflect on equality issues in their work while exeriencing alternative methods - build Zipper Scultures and Collage, use Drama, Image Theatre and Story telling.  On completion of the course participants will be able to:

  • Have examined a range of innovative methodologies that they can integrated into their practice.
  • Have reflected on the various dimensions of equality and made connections to their practice.
  • Be informed of the Equality Framework being developed by the Equality Studies Centre, University College Dublin.  t

Literacy & Equality Through Gamelan

Queen's University Belfast
Wednesdays, 1 November - 20 November 2005, 5pm - 7.30pm


This course will be held in the Ethnomusicology Department of the School of Antropological Studies (QUB). Gamelan instructioon will be given by ethnomusicologist Jonathan McIntosh, who taugh the well-received LEIS gamelan course that was offered May - June 2005 and included a performance at the International Arts-Based Educational Research conference at QUB.

This is a five week accredited course that will use tutor's experiences of learning to play gamelan to encourange and develop the use of a variety of creative methodologies in their practice.

What is gamelan?
A gamelan is an orchestra of percussion instruments from Indonesia that includes metallophones (glockensiel-like instruments), gongs and drums.

Who can play?
No musical experience or qualifications is necessary.  Anyone can play the gamelan regardless of age or abilitiy.

As a literacy tutor why learn to play gamelan?

  • use your learning experience to explore and develop the supports needed to implement various creative methodologies in your practice.
  • use your experiences of playing gamelan to examine issues of equality and diversity within adult literacy education.
  • try something different and have some fun!
