QUEEN’S UNIVERSITY BELFAST

What is the LEIS Project?

The LEIS project is a joint North/South initiative between Queen’s University Belfast (QUB) and the Equality Studies Centre at University College Dublin (UCD). LEIS is a Peace II Programme Project for Peace and Reconciliation in Northern Ireland and Border Counties of the Republic of Ireland and is funded jointly by the European Union and the Irish & British Governments.

LEIS is an action research project that is taking opportunities created by peace to contribute to the process of reconciliation through an exploration of equality issues and their links to adult literacy practices. The project has been developing non-text teaching and learning resources for literacy tutors that focus on issues of equality. Through its web-site, CD and programme of seminars, it is making available new and exciting methodologies which enable tutors to develop innovative ways of working with students and learners. The development workers have situated the project within the equality framework of equality as developed by the Equality Studies Centre, UCD, using four key dimensions of equality.

Respect and Recognition

  • Respect and Recognition
  • Love, Care and Solidarity
  • Resources
  •  Power Relations

The aims of the conference are:

  • To raise awareness about equality issues within the broad field of adult literacy practice.
  • To provide an opportunity for dialogue amongst adult literacy practitioners, policy makers
    & researchers.
  • To celebrate findings on creativity and equality and literacy emerging from the Leis project.
  • To examine equality issues within a national and international framework.

Who is the Conference for?

The LEIS project has involved learners, tutors and tutor trainers from all education sectors North & South in Ireland to examine equality issues within adult literacy education using creative methodologies.  The conference will be of interest to all those working in the broad field of adult literacy practice, particularly those involved in developing and delivering the adult literacy curriculum.
